Collection of newspaper clippings, press releases and memoranda detailing the activities of and promoting the ideas of the Council of National Defense and the Committee of more Public Safety. These may have been used as propaganda tools during World War I to entice recruitment, heighten troop morale, support farm productivity, and press the necessity for home front support. Images are arranged chronologically by date of clipping. This collection contains Board of Pardons reviews of criminal cases, except impeachment, to determine whether clemency should be recommended to the Governor for his or her more approval or disapproval. While the United States' Constitution grants the President of the United States the power to grant pardons, in Pennsylvania the pardoning power is shared between the Board of Pardons and the Governor. The Board of Pardons consists of five members including the Lieutenant Governor who serves as chairman, the Attorney General, and three members appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. This collection contains applications made to, and proclamations issued by, the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons. Grouped into applications and proclamations and then arranged chronologically by date of action. The applications volumes provide brief narrative case histories and recommendations for pardons or commutations and whether the pardons or commutations were granted. Volume 1 covering the period 1874-1877 provides reasons why the Pardon Board made its recommendations while for the period 1882-1930 records of commutation actions are included. The last volume covering the period 1931-1934 contains mostly commutation records with only a few pardon actions. The proclamation volumes provide the Board's recommendations and reasons for its judgments. less

This collection contains annual assessment reports for the Triennial Farm Census as completed by the local assessor for each borough or township. Information provided by the more 1924 census returns includes the name of the occupant or person operating the farm and whether they were owned, rented or managed the farm; number of males and females in the family; total acres of farm land; number of acres for winter wheat, rye, oats, corn (for grain and silage), buck wheat, potatoes, tobacco, tame hay, and alfalfa hay; number of bearing and nonbearing apple trees; number of bearing peach trees; number of animals including horses, mules, dairy cattle, other cattle, swine, sheep, and hens and pullets; number of bee hives; number of silos; amount of equipment such as tractors, trucks, and automobiles; whether the farm is equipped with a radio; and whether the farm is equipped with electricity supplies by either a individual plant or a central station. In addition to the previous information, the 1927 census also recorded if the farm had running water in the kitchen, a furnace heating system, milking machines, gas engines and telephones.  Records are grouped by year of report, and thereunder arranged alphabetically by name of county, and thereunder by name of borough or township. This collection, arranged chronologically, contains Baldric purchase reports for clan supplies, as well as bills, checks, and receipts for food and uniforms. Details of members' financial more accounts also provided, as well as scratch paper used for accounting purposes. This collection, arranged chronologically, contains official documents, such as Imperial Kligrapp appointments, applications for reinstatement of former Klansmen, as well as appeals for admission, are provided more in this series. Numerous handwritten general interest letters from the public are also included. Official decrees for those Klansmen who had been banished are given, as well as obituaries for prominent members of the KKK. A large portion of the correspondence concerns the Grand Dragon, Samuel G. Stouch, and his letters concerning the establishment of Klan contacts in neighboring states. Kligrapp quarterly reports and requests for the establishment of Klan chapters are also given. This collection contains series grouped by subject and then chronologically, of various papers, election returns, rosters, publications, and applications detailing Klan operations. The rosters and election more returns were sent to the headquarters in Philadelphia, listing new Klan personnel and elected leaders. Each quarterly roster (present for the years 1933-1938) details the number of new members received, those suspended or deceased, the total number of members, losses and/or gains, as well as the province number, Klan number, and official Klan name and address. Election returns, or 'Report of Officers Elect,' provide names, numbers, location of Klan, date of klonklave and location of klavern in question. The names of the various officer positions up for election included: Exalted Cyclops, Klaliff, Klokard, Kludd, Kligrapp, Klabee, Klad, Klarogo, Klexter, Nighthawk, Klikann Chief, and Klokan numbers 1 and 2. Among the various papers are counter signs giving code and password cyphers once a Klan met necessary requirements and all memberships were paid up. National and Imperial countersigns were given and consisted primarily of state names. All were signed by Stouch, the Imperial authority of the KKK in Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The bottom half of the counter sign sheet consisted of a pledge of undertaking the proper instructions for guarding the passwords. The enlistment papers, 1924-1926, provide information relative to new Klan recruits. Data such as the company, troop number, rank, serial number, name, address (street, city, county), enlistment period, age, height, weight, complexion, eye color, hair color, distinguishing marks, marital status, military service, education, qualifications, character, occupation, enlistment date, and signature of the recruit is provided. Enlistment papers are only available for the following counties: Adams, Allegheny, Beaver, Carbon, Clarion, Crawford, Erie, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer, Northumberland, Venango, Washington, and Westmoreland. An information file regarding the acquisition of the KKK records is present, attributing the 'find' to Private R. Roth, Pennsylvania State Police 4th Squadron Intelligence, on 3 June 1940. Mailing lists, 1924-1938, give province number, county seat, population, square mileage, name, street address, city, and county. There is a list for the Women of Unity Klan #17, New Jersey. Official Bulletins, 1936-1937, declare provincial tax reports, Imperial Klonvocations, lunch committees, presidential elections, Halloween parties, and Ham and Egg suppers. Publications which belonged to Samuel Stouch are present, including Facts in Review, published by the German Library of Information in NYC (which listed daily news broadcasts from Berlin) and a book written by fifty-four leading American writers, We Hold These Truths, which provides statements on anti-Semitism and contains lists of anti-Semitic publishers, organizations, and individuals in America. Quarterly reports list all members in good standing, the number of members naturalized, those reinstated and transferred, those died, banished, or suspended. This collection, arranged chronologically, contains reports listing Kleagle robes ordered, address, date, location of Klan, quantity of Klansman's and Terror's robes and helmets ordered, as well more as those for the Exalted Cyclops robe and helmet sets. The name, number, and hat size for each Klansman is also stated. This collection contains copies, arranged chronologically and thereunder numerically by license number, of medical licenses designated by law to be retained in the archives of the more Department of Public Instruction. The certificates list the name of the physician, the date the license was issued, and the names of the agency and of officials conferring the license. This collection is a continuation from the Department of Education series 22.50 Record of Medical Licenses Recommended by the State Medical Society covering 1894-1911, these records are also digitally available. This collection of news clipping scrapbooks provide information on topics such as crop estimates, increases, declines, and total yield in production; statistics on crops, livestock, orchards, more acreage, machinery, and farmers; estimates and reports on weather conditions, disasters, and diseases that impacted agricultural production; state farm shows and awards; information on records, standards, and surveys collected by the Department of Agriculture; cost of production and information on prices for agricultural products; and political legislation and social groups affecting Pennsylvania farmers. In 1924, the selected news clippings are more politically focused, and there are references to World War I wartime wheat production and Prohibition. In 1924-1930 and 1940, articles focus on decline in prices and financial losses for Pennsylvania farmers. The 1940 news clippings are predominantly about publicizing farm shows statewide. The news clippings are not always labeled with dates or title of newspaper; however, the scrapbooks contain clippings from a variety of sources and towns across the Commonwealth.  They are primarily arranged by year and article date. This collection, arranged chronologically, contains the applications submitted by motion picture film companies requesting the Board of Censors to review their films. The application gives the more title of the film; the name of the manufacturer; the names of the leading actors and actresses; the number and length of reels; the style of film and indicates whether the film was approved without changes, approved with eliminations, or condemned outright. If the film was approved with eliminations, an Eliminations Form is attached and lists the specific changes that needed to be made. There is often also present a Memorandum of Changes form that reveals when requested eliminations or changes were made and when the Board approved the film. Some applications have copies of the script attached. less

This collection contains correspondence, arranged alphabetically by subject, received and sent by the Board of Censors chairman and members. Also included are a few legal briefs, more press releases and movie reviews. The correspondence were received by or sent to Abraham Levy, Special Deputy Attorney General, citizens, clergy, motion picture companies, officials from Pennsylvania state government agencies, and officials from agencies in other states such as Ohio, New York and Maryland. Subjects included are the films "The Birth of a Baby" and "She Shoulda Said No"; censorship; news clippings; clergyman and women's clubs; television censorship; condemned motion pictures; complaints; and soviet films. Correspondence discuss the review of motion picture films by the board, revisions to make the movie appropriate for release, denial for release of the film, opinions from agency officials and other states regarding the film's content. less

This collection contains appeals, replies, briefs, orders and correspondence, arranged chronologically, filed by motion picture companies, the State Board of Censors, the attorney general and the more court in matters regarding the denial of the release of a film by the Board of Censors. less

This collection contains minutes, arranged chronologically, documenting the daily activities of the Board of Censors reviewers. Information contained in the minutes provides the name and manufacturer more of the motion picture films reviewed, whether they were approved without change, approved with eliminations, or condemned. If the film was approved with changes or condemned the reason and required revisions were listed. The minutes also list contacts with film manufacturers who appealed the review of films by the Board of Censors. less

This collection contains annual reports, arranged chronologically, submitted by the Board concerning prosecutions of violations; the sale of substituted approval seals; budget allotments; the number of more movies and reels examined; the number of films certified, modified, with number of eliminations, or disapproved; list of appeals taken to court; and number of field inspections. less

This collection contains a wide variety of documents,l arranged by subject, providing insight into the Board's operating procedures. Among the materials present are Fines, 1919-1947, that more list the fines assessed to movie theaters for showing films that were not edited to meet the Board's requirements or did not show the Board's seal of approval and Certificates of Censorship, 1915-1951, that are the official forms sent to the manufacturer to indicate if a film has been approved, approved with eliminations, or not approved. Information included is the film's title, name of manufacturer, number of reels and date certificate was issued; Action on "Soundies," no date, list of films with sound that were reviewed by the Board and includes the film's title, leading actor and actress, and what action was taken; Record of Violations, 1939-1949, lists fines issued to each manufacturer giving the film's title, location where shown, date of the incident, and violation; Rule and Regulations, 1915-1950, contains copies of acts, rules, mission statements, legal briefs and correspondence used to direct the Board; Procedures and Forms, 1915-1956, contains copies of forms, sample letters, certificates, affidavits, violation notices, monthly reports and procedures; Inspector's Report on Eliminations, 1915-1951, contains the report submitted by the inspector after reviewing a film including the film's title, manufacturer, and requested eliminations; Violations of Censorship, 1927-1929, contains reports, correspondence and affidavits reporting violations and requests regarding the violation. Information includes the film's title, the name of the manufacturer, and the date and location of the incident and the violation. less

This collection contains records of persons employed as State troopers by the Commonwealth. Entries list the person's name, identification number, age, birthplace, race, height, hair and more eye colors, and occupation previous to enlistment. less

The collection, arranged chronologically by start of strike date, includes records contained in individual reports include police endorsements of special duties assigned to troops to investigate more labor unrest, patrol reports from picket areas, telegrams from the superintendent to local sheriffs, and various radiograms. Strike reports were filed for the following labor occupations: coal, milk, clothes, silk, clay products, teachers, textiles, glass, sewer pipes, lumber, hosiery, steel, refractories, chocolate, ship building, leather, rubber, electric products, trucks, turnpike employees, iron, aircraft manufacture, shoes, wallpaper, buses, and highway construction workers. Individual details of those troopers involved in the surveillance of industrial disturbances are given, as well as passes issued to companies in order that some workers might work despite a strike or disturbance. There are also general orders issued by the superintendent pointing out that before the state police could be sent to an area of unrest, the governor must be notified that it is beyond the local sheriff's control. This collection, grouped by troop and arranged thereafter chronologically, contains semiannual reports for Troops A, B, C, and D as issued to the superintendent of the more PA State Police residing in Harrisburg by troop commanders. Topics included in the reports are: arms and equipment status, arrests (by county and amount of fines imposed), barrack and stable conditions, details furnished for special public occasions, disposition of cases previously reported as pending, fines collected by other state departments, horses (condition of, number lost/gained, recapitulations, those reported sick), motor transportation, patrols and mileage, recommendations, record of important events, requests for assistance, schools, stolen property, substations, and overall troop conditions (number reported sick, summary court martials, number resigned, and number of men gained/lost. less

This collection contains original drawings executed in the field relating to rights-of-way and grading of the Original Section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and its subsequent extensions. more The majority are rendered in pencil or pen on sheets of engineering graph paper, and measure on average 32" x 38 1/4". Headings for either the Department of Transportation or the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission are printed on the tops of the various pages. Most drawings are grouped in sets, with each set pertaining to a specific location along the Turnpike's route. Data varies from sheet to sheet, and may include: final book number, county, district number, contract number, section number, route number, drawing number, and general descriptive information. Drawings are primarily cross sections with some construction plan and profile drawings. Typical subjects include: grading sections, channel changes, borrow pits, bridges, culverts, ramps, overpasses, road relocations, viaducts, interchanges, tunnels, tunnel approaches, toll plazas, service stations, and maintenance buildings. Microfilm rolls contain Bridge Unit drawings, construction drawings for various sections, tunnels, and affiliated turnpike structures. less

This collection contains notebooks executed in the field for the construction of the Turnpike, and is arranged by construction contract number, the volumes chronicle the planning more and construction of the Original Section, as well as many of the later extensions. Each field book is individually numbered, containing a wide variety of information such as diagrams, engineering measurements and data, notes, sketches, and weather conditions. The majority of the books come with an index card bearing the following information specific to each volume: county, division number, district number, dates, road section number, contract number, note taker, as well as a description of the book's contents. Many of the notebooks contain the Resident Engineer's Sketchbooks which tracked progress of work in the field on contracts primarily focusing on structures, bridges, and calculations. less

This collection is of World War I era posters of varying size, color and medium pertaining to the U.S. and Pennsylvania. The posters are manufactured for more many different businesses, institutions, and government agencies, and the artwork is by famous, obscure and unknown commercial illustrators. Those printed by various federal agencies were intended to generate patriotic fervor in Americans. less
